The Automatic transmission system
The purpose of the automatic transmission is to allow the engine to operate in it's narrow range of speeds while providing a wide range of output speeds. Without a transmission cars would be limited to one gear ratio and that gear would have to be selected in order for a car to go to it's desired speed.
